I have just noticed that the bank in this photo on the RHS is actually the Northern Bank. The First Building on the LHS is Hill's Chemists, whose front and contents are now in the Folk Park.

    World History:
Cinema manager Douglas Cooper (Squadron Leader H.D.H Cooper) was a POW at Stalag Luft III (now Żagań in Poland) during World War 2. The camp was made famous by the films "The Great Escape" and "The Wooden Horse". Although Douglas did not take part in the actual escape, he did help to plan and construct the 'Wooden Horse'.

    Architecture:

    • Cruciform church, with 3-bay arcaded nave, aisle and belfry tower with broach spire.
    • Architect: John Kennedy, Londonderry
(described as 'Mr Kennedy of London' by mistake in the Irish Builder 1 Sep 1874)
    • Contractor: James McClay, Strabane (cost £4,200).
    • 1874 17 Nov: Foundation stone laid by Duchess of Abercorn.
    • 1879: Bishop Alexander consecrates the church
Christ Church (Church of Ireland in the parish of Camus-juxta-Mourne) opened in 1879. The church was built in memory of Rev James Smith; rector of the parish from 1835 to 1860. Rev Smith's successor, Rev William Alexander (rector 1860-1867 and husband of Cecil Frances Humphreys 1850) purchased the Bowling Green site.

Rev Alexander later became Bishop of Derry and Raphoe. In 1879 Bishop Alexander was asked to consecrate the church.

1885: Belfast Bank moves from Bowling Green Square to Main Street (image right).

In the postcard view, the second building in from the left edge is the Provincial Bank. The Belfast Bank is shown near the right edge of the image. Two hotels are listed on Main Street in the 1901 Census. The hotel listed at 105 Main Street, was kept by Ellen Mc Elwaine ('Commercial Hotel' 1901 BPUD). The other, listed at 42 Main Street, was kept by Eva Thompson ('Victoria Hotel'  1905 Trade Directory). The edge of the Victoria Hotel can be seen on the right edge of the postcard. The Commercial Hotel is shown beside the Provincial Bank.

The building on the left, closest to the camera, appears to have Seed, or Feed, Merchant written on the frieze above the doorway. The signs on the windows are advertising flour.
